Off-Duty Officers Accused of Drunken Brawling and Racial Slurs

Minneapolis Police are under media attack due to two brawls in the last year in which off-duty officers allegedly used racial slurs. (1, 2)   As a former chief of the department, I told officers that there will be days when we would be less proud of putting on the uniform of the Minneapolis Police Department. The recent incidents reported should embarrass and concern anyone who has worn a uniform and their families. These difficult times are reminders that the people behind those badges are human beings. On September 18,2016 a crazed terrorist went on a rampage at the Cross Roads Mall in St. Cloud, MN. He stabbed 10 shoppers before Jason Falconer shot and killed him. Jason is a member of the SMEAC consulting and training group. There is no doubt that Jason's quick and decisive action saved many lives. As the Chief of Police in St. Cloud said, Jason was the right person, at the right place, at the right time. The members of SMEAC are proud of Jason's heroic actions.
